The Annual
Russ Larsen Classic was held Friday night at the Superior
Speedway.
Two weeks
ago Rick Hanestad got quite a surprise as he found himself
in victory lane for the first time at the Superior Speedway
after Pat Doar had his drive shaft break on the final lap in
a race where Doar had a substantial lead.
But Friday it was all Hanestad as he jumped out to the lead
early and cruised on for his second win of the season.
The battle was behind Hanestad as Darrell Nelson used
most of the race to get passed Harry Hanson and finally Adam
Hensel to finish second. Hensel did
finish third with Hanson fourth followed by Aaron Lillo who
started dead last finished in fifth.
Earlier in the night Nelson was uncontested in the first
heat as he picked up his 3rd heat win followed by
Tim McMann and Hanestad. In the second
heat it was Hanson who had to hold off Don Copp to win to
pick up his 2nd heat win of the season.
On the night Copp extended his consecutive laps
completed in a feature race streak to 348.
Copp has also finished in the top 10 in the last 6
races he has competed in.
In the
Modified feature it was Kelly Estey who took advantage of
the pole position to win his first feature of the season at
the Superior Speedway and complete the sweep.
Darrell Nelson was right behind Estey trying
most of the tricks in his book to get past Estey but
could not as Nelson finished second followed by Jad Carlson.
Jason Miller started in on the outside of row 9 and
moved all the way up to fourth and with a few more laps
might have been able to catch the leaders.
Greg Chesley finished in fifth. In
the heat races earlier it was Estey in the first heat
followed by Scott Hudack and Chesley. The second heat went
to Al Uotinen followed by Jayme Lautigar and Nelson.
Hudack extended his consecutive laps completed in
feature races to 200 laps and Chesley extended his streak to
140. With the great finish by Miller he
has now finished in the Top 10 in his last 5 features in
Superior. Chesley has also extended his top 10 finishes to 5
consecutive features.
Trevor
Wilson from Superior started on the outside of the first row
and jumped out to an early lead and picked up his first ever
Super Stock win and he did it in dramatic fashion winning by
almost a full straight away in the feature race.
Wilson led all of the 18 laps of the race.
Dave Flynn moved up from the 4th row to
finish second with Mike Bellefeuille in third followed by
Scott Lawrence and Joe Oliver. In the
first heat race Lawrence picked up his third heat win with
Wilson second and Oliver third. In the
second heat it was Bellefeuille picking up his second heat
win of the year followed by Flynn and Ronnie Malecki.
Lawrence did extend his consecutive lap streak in
feature races to 238. Oliver has now
finished in the top 10 in 18 straight races and Lawrence has
finished in the top 10 in 14 straight races.
In the
Midwest Modified division turned out some great battles
again on Friday night. Adam Archer jumped
out to the early lead but later suffered a flat tire and had
to drop out of the race. Randy Silverness
took the lead away from Archer on the 4th lap of
the 16 lap feature but it was Scott Herrick from Proctor who
would take the lead a lap later and wouldn’t look back as he
would go on to win his second feature of the season.
Taylor Luethner finished in second with Jeff Pohjonen
finishing third after dropping out of his feature race
earlier in the night, Lance Solem finished fourth and Randy
Silverness Jr. in fifth. In the Midwest
Modified heat races it was Shawn Rivord winning his first
heat of the season in the first race followed by Jesse
Ogston and Herrick. In the 2nd
heat it was Skeeter Estey from Kelly Lake who edged out
Silverness and Leuthner. And in the 3rd
heat it was Archer followed by E. J. Hietala and Solem.
On the night Silverness and Herrick extended their
consecutive feature laps completed to 221 with Solem and
Ogston extending their streak to 216.
Silverness also has now finished in the top 10 in a feature
for 15 consecutive races.
Chad
Carlson of Superior made his return to the Superior Speedway
one to remember as he held off a great field of competitors
won his first feature of the season. The
battle upfront was pretty intense with the racing sometimes
four wide and in the end Richard Dzelak finished the 14 lap
race in second followed by Dan Larsen, Pat VanErt and Steve
Christman. Tim Carlson of Superior held off Jim Cooper and
Chad Carlson to win his 2nd heat win of the year
in the first heat race of the night. In
the second heat it was Austin Blom from Saginaw who started
on the front row and jumped out the early lead and held on
to win his 2nd heat win of the year as
Steve Christman came from the 3rd row to
finish second with Rick Cornelison. And
Richard Dzelak from Superior who also took advantage of
starting in the front row and didn’t look back
as he cruised to his 2nd
heat win of the year with Dan Larsen coming in second
and Pat Van Ert third. VanErt extended
his consecutive lap streak to 216 laps and Blom has now
finished in the Top 10 in a feature for 11 consecutive
races.
