WDRL LATE MODELS
The weather
threatened and the fog rolled in towards the end the of the
racing show but it didn’t affect the WDRL and the race show
at the Superior Speedway on Thursday.
The
WDRL(World Dirt Racing League) was at the Superior Speedway
and put on a great show for the fans with the 50 Lap feature
race. It was Jimmy Mars from Menomonie
who took the early lead and no one could catch the white 28
car though Darrell Nelson of Hermantown made some runs at
him early but couldn’t quite get past him.
It stayed Mars and Nelson as the top two until they
encountered some lap traffic and there was an opening for
Chad Simpson to get past Nelson and on the last lap Justin
Fegers made a move that propelled him past both Simpson and
Nelson. Fegers finished behind Mars
followed by Simpson, Nelson and Jake Redetzke.
Mars said in victory lane after the race, “It was
tough to race because the shield on my helmet kept fogging
up but other than that it was a great race.”
He went on to talk about losing to Redetzke the night
before in Brainerd by .02 seconds, “It was a heartbreaker
last night so tonight was a heck of a race.”
In the first heat race of the night Simpson from
Mount Vernon, Iowa won followed by Rick Hanestad and Jake
Redetzke. In the second heat it was Adam
Hensel from Barron edging out Chris Simpson and Denny
Eckrich. In Heat race number three it was
Pat Doar from New Richmond followed by Dave Eckrich and
Darrell Nelson. Bill Frye got tangled up
with Jason Utter and had to drop out of the heat race.
Heat race four was Mars followed by Don Copp and
Justin Fegers. Steve Laursen from
Cumberland advanced to the feature by winning the B-Main, he
was followed by Ashley Anderson, Rob Moss, Eric Pember and
Al Purkey. And the pole dash of the night
went to Doar followed by Mars, Simpson and Nelson.
Some things
remain consistent in the Super Stock division as the
familiar names and the orange cars won the heat races with
Joe Oliver of Superior winning the first heat followed by
last week’s feature winner Dave Flynn and Trevor Wilson.
In the second heat it was Scott Lawrence of Superior
followed by Paul Orloski, who drove a great race, and Keith
Kern. Lawrence drew the pole in the 18
Lap feature and proved it proved to be too much as he picked
up his second feature win of the season and pulled off the
sweep for the night. Lawrence won the
opening night feature and finished second in the two since.
Lawrence came into the night as the points leader
with 165 points which was 2 points ahead of Dave Flynn of
Superior who finished 2nd in the feature followed
in the race by Jim Campbell of Two Harbors and Oliver.
Scott
Herrick a familiar face and name at the Superior Speedway
but not in the Midwest Modified division picked up his first
feature win on Thursday night as he started on the poll in
the 16 lap race and held off Steve Stuart of Ashland and
Jeremy Houle of Forest Lake for the win.
In the 2nd heat of the night it was just the
opposite as Stuart had to hold off Herrick for the win.
In the first heat of the night it was Lance Solem
winning over Joe Olson and Pat Cook. And
in the 3rd heat it was Jeremey Houle, opening
night’s feature winner, followed by Jeff Pohjonen and Deven
VanHouse. Houle came into the night as
the points leader 7 points ahead of Skeeter Estey, who opted
for Thursday night racing in Grand Rapids instead of
Superior, Randy Silverness Jr. was third in points, Taylor
Luethner was fourth and Herrick in fifth.
Last year’s
point champion Pat VanErt of Foxboro won his second feature
of the season. It was Tom Cornelison Jr.
of Holyoke that drove the familiar 21 station wagon of Chad
Carlson to win the first heat of the night but the rear
bumper came loose in the feature and had to go to the work
area to fix in as a result finished the feature a lap down.
The second heat race went to Hermantown’s Dan Larsen
who continues to run well in Superior after winning the
feature a week earlier. And in the final
heat race of the night it was Ashley Smith of South Range
winning her first heat race of the season but would spin out
coming out of turn 4 in the feature to put her to the back.
VanErt came into the night trailing Larsen by 12
points in the current point standings and Larsen finished 2nd
to VanErt in the feature followed by Tim Carlson, Austin
Blom and Steve Christman.
The
Superior Speedway continues with regular racing on Friday,
June 26th with hotlaps at 6:30 and racing at 7pm.
Superior Speedway is your NASCAR home track and the
