Annual JW Zembo Super Stock Classic
14
Super Stocks including 2 past champions(Mike Bellefuille(Duluth)
and Scott Lawrence(Superior)) were on hand for the 9th
running of the JW Zembo Super Stock Classic Friday night at
the Superior Speedway.
The Super Stock night and the $700 check to the
winner went to Superior native Dave Flynn who won the
feature for the 2nd week in a row.
Flynn became the 8th different winner to
claim the top spot in the Zembo Classic.
Flynn jumped out to the early lead and never really
looked back as the battle was for 2nd through 5th
positions. Early
on in the race Lawrence battled Bellefuille for 2nd
place but couldn’t get pasted.
In the mean time Joe Oliver(Superior) moved up to 4th
place and started a heated battle with Lawrence and actually
took over the 3rd spot on lap 7 beating him out
of turns 1 and 2.
Lawrence would pass Oliver back for 3rd on
lap 13 but Oliver would re-gain the spot on the next lap and
hold Lawrence off and finished in 3rd.
Lawrence extended his consecutive feature laps to 184
and has finished in the top 10 in his last 11 feature races
at the Superior Speedway.
The rest of the night again
belonged to Darrell Nelson(Hermantown) who for
the second week in a row won both the Late Model
and Modified feature races.
Todd Gehl(Solon Springs) would jump out
to the early lead in the Late Model Feature but
by lap 4 Nelson was up to 2nd and on
lap 5 took the lead and lead the rest of the way
in the 22 lap feature race.
Don Copp(Brule) and Nelson won the heat
races earlier to give Nelson the sweep in
the late model division.
Nelson extended his consecutive laps
completed in feature races at the Superior
Speedway to 174 and has finished in the top 10
in his last 7 feature starts.
Copp extended his consecutive laps
completed streak to 304.
Things were similar but
tougher for Nelson in the Modified feature race
as he started on the inside of row three and
took until lap 11 of the 20 lap feature race to
capture the lead as he got past Scott Hudack(Ashland).
Then a lap later Kelly Estey(Kelly Lake)
spun on corners 1 & 2 to cause a caution which
brought the rest of the pack within grasp of the
leaders.
The final 8 laps had a great battle going
for 2nd through 5th place
between Nick Lavato(Proctor), Al Uotinen(Superior),
Hudack and Pat Doar(New Richmond) as all of them
went back and forth and were side by side on the
front and back stretches.
Eventually Uotinen would get past the
rest and try and reel in Nelson to no avail and
Doar would edge Lavato on the final lap to take
third, with Hudack finishing 5th.
Nelson extended his consecutive laps
completed in a feature race to an unprecedented
395 in a Modified and has finished in the top 5
in his last 10 feature races in Superior.
Hudack extended his consecutive lap
streak to 160.
John Henkemeyer(Sauk Rapids) made the
trip to Superior worth it as he captured his first feature
in a Midwest Modified at the Superior Speedway.
Henkemeyer drew the poll position and took advantage
as he led all 16 laps.
Randy Silverness Jr.(Superior) made a couple of runs
at Henkemeyer but to no avail as he was busy trying to hold
off Jeremy Houle(Forest Lake) and Jesse Ogston(Duluth).
Silverness extended his consecutive lap streak in a
feature race to 183 and has now finished in the top 5 in the
last 4 features he has raced in.
Scott Herrick(Proctor), Jeremy Houle(Forest Lake) and
Skeeter Estey(Kelly Lake) were the winners earlier in
the night in the heat races.
Austin Blom(Twig) started on the inside
of row 2 and jumped out to an early lead in the Pure Stock
feature with the battle for 2nd, 3rd
and 4th between Dan Larsen(Hermantown), Richard
Dezlak Jr.(Superior) and Steve Christman(Superior) going
three wide on the straight away.
Christman made a run on Blom on lap 4 getting along
side of him on the backstretch and taking the lead coming
out of turn 4.
While the battle for the lead was going on Pat VanErt(Foxboro)
had moved up from the 4th row to battle for the
lead but there was a caution flag thrown on the same lap and
on the re-start VanErt and Christman got together on the
front stretch causing Christman’s car to roll over and his
night done for the night.
VanErt was sent to the back for the indident.
This put Blom back to the lead on the re-start and
despite numerous attempts to pass by Larsen, Blom held him
off to pick up his first feature win at the Superior
Speedway and his 2nd of his career.
Paul Gucinski(Britt) finished third followed by Jeff
Christman(Superior) and Scott Larsen(Carlton).
Blom did complete the sweep as he won his heat race
earlier and extended his consecutive laps completed in a
feature to 102 and has finished in the top 10 in his last 8
races at the Superior Speedway.
VanErt extended his consecutive laps streak to 174
and Dan Larsen to 90.
